To Ink Or Not To Ink

The other day, I came across this post by Big Little Wolf.  I found it interesting, and she seemed curious about tattooing and why people do it.  I was surprised, however, when I read the comments.  Out of 12 commenters, I was the only one who had ever gotten a tattoo.  One of them in particular was very outspoken and to be honest, ticked me off just a bit.  Ah well, to each their own.  Still, I couldn’t believe that no one else had been inked.

In general, tattoos don’t bother me.  In this day and age, most people my age don’t even bat an eyelash at them anymore.  I wouldn’t say that they’re necessarily a turn-on, but they sure as shit can be.  I got my first tat when I was 18, and really only did it because I had turned 18 and didn’t smoke, and lottery tickets never brought me much fun.  I’d wanted a tattoo ever since I could remember, and I was finally able to do it!  I thought long and hard about where the placement would be.  I wanted it to be concealable, and I wanted to be original, so I went with the small of my back.  Stay with me, here.  Waaay back in 1998, I didn’t know anyone with a tattoo there. This was pre-tramp-stamp (I HATE that term) mania.  All the women I knew who had them had them on their ankles or shoulders.  I was safe in my non-conformity, right?  Go ahead and laugh…I am.  Next, I had to decide what to get.  I wanted it to be delicate and ladylike, and I wanted it to be small.  After looking at tons of pictures, I decided on a butterfly (yes, cliche numero dos, or is that tres?).  The bottom wings were blue and the top were red, and it was cute and tiny and exactly what I had wanted.  It was right on my back bone, as I was as skinny as a rail at the time, and it hurt like a mofo, but I did it.  And I loved it.

I never regretted my decision to get the tattoo, not even when my daddy saw it by accident one day during a visit home.  Since I didn’t see it all the time, I would sometimes forget it was there.  When my husband and I split, I was inconsolible.  In one of those “woman done gone crazy” kind of moments that happen during/after divorce, I decided that I would change my butterfly into something else.  I would start fresh.  I already knew what the butterfly would become – a Texas.  Yes, the shape of the state of Texas.  No matter where in the world I lived or visited, Texas was the place that was safe, it was always home.  So, when my little sister came to visit and help me pack, we made a trip to the tattoo parlor and I went home with a different mark.  Oddly enough, it was the exact same place I had gotten my butterfly etched 10 years before.  I say odd because that city had been our first post after we got married, and it was also where we got divorced.  We’d lived in 3 other states in between, but ended up right back there.

Now there’s the question of whether or not tattoos turn you on.  To be honest, it depends on the person, what the tattoo is of, and whether or not is well-done.  A shitty tattoo can be distracting, people!  Douche had two tattoos that I hated.  I wasn’t with him when he got either, and trust me – I would have tried to talk him out of them if I were.  They always bugged me.  Of the guys I’ve been with post-divorce, only one was tatted up, all on his arms, but not full sleeve.  All of his tattoos were very well-done, and they fit his look (50’s greaser/rockabilly type).  He had pin-up girls on his forearms, and they were HOT.  I even named them, Lola and Gretchen.  I would trace them and admire them, they were beautiful.  That’s Lola, below.  However, I wasn’t into him because of his tattoos, and the other non-tatted guys weren’t any less sexy or hot because they didn’t have them.  In fact, when one told me he was thinking of getting one, I secretly hoped he wouldn’t.

lola

I did some research and asked a former lover what he thought about my tattoo, to which he said, “it’s tasteful,” and also that, “tramp stamps are hot, arm tattoos are not.”   Do I feel like I am more sexy because of my tattoo?  No, I don’t.  Do I think I’d be more sexy without it?  Nope.  It’s just a small part of me, a little scrap of skin barely 2 inches square, but it’s still a part of me.

This is where YOU come in, my lovies.  Do you have any tattoos?  What/where are they?  Do you regret having them?  Do you find them a turn-on?  Turn-off?  Would you date someone with tattoos or dismiss someone for them?  Inquiring minds want to know!

***UPDATE*** The link to the post was broken, but should be fixed now.  Sorry about that!

No tattoos here, but would certainly consider one if I could ever make up my mind on an idea. A tattoo can be sexy and it can be a turn off depending on so many factors. I will say that I’ve seen many a young lady with a visible tattoo on their neck with something stupid like “Juicy” or “Baby” and it’s a total turn off. Or you see a name tattoo on their hand or wrist, I mean WTF? I mean a tattoo that’s artwork is one thing, but one that looks like you forget your name and luckily had it put on you in prison is another.

I have 2 tats. I love them. They both mean a lot to me. I have a running pig on my left boob and ping rolling dice on the top of my butt with an 8 and a 4. As a professional lady, I don’t want tats where they can be seen unless I show them.

But I find tats a huge turn on a man. Very, very sexy.

I don’t have any tattoos but I’ve been planning to get a tat that says Vino (yes, really!) on my very lower left abdomen. Like where even a bathing suite would cover because I want it to be for me and no one else. It will be small as well. I want that i in Vino to be a wine glass.

Ocassionally I see a guy with a tattoo that is sexy. Like if he has really big forearms or something (I love big arms!) but for the most part thats not the type of guy I go for. An over-abundance of tattoos definitely turns me off. But I don’t see anything wrong with a couple well place or tasteful tats.

And I feel your pain on the Tramp Stamp thing! You are so right, back then girls w/ tattoos usually had them on their ankles!

I have 4. My 1st was the day after I graduated from high school. I got a butterfly on my stomach. Love the tat, hate the placement. I should have known I would gain an ass ton of weight and the thing would stretch out like no other.

My 2nd, again at 18 was a frog sitting on a mushroom smoking a joint on the back of my calf. Yeah, I was a genius. Luckily you can barely tell the joint part so I really don’t mind it.

3rd was my initials above my belly button. Homemade. Luckily that one has faded and barely anyone sees my beer belly anyways.

4th is a sea turtle on my shoulder. I love this one! With a zoology degree degree I have mostly gotten some of my favorite animals. I still need a mammal (otter) and a bird. The Husband doesn’t want me to get anymore. But that is the 1st thing I am going to do when he gets deployed again. Wanna come with me?

Ha! Ginger Magnolia, baby! You’ve got a different readership than mine, for sure. Happy for this bit of cross-pollination. I was very surprised that more people didn’t say they had a tattoo. It’s still not my thing – but as I said – I certainly have a few friends who love it, and who have several tattoos – ankles, wrists, lower back seem to be the place they’ve preferred.

They are certainly personal statements for them, and artistic ones, and usually have to do with moments in their life. (At moments I wanted to recall, I purchased a small piece of art if I could – hey – it’s still an art thing!!)

Glad to see your readers opening up on the subject. (Now ask them about the piercings. See if they’ll go peek at the piercing pic and offer an opinion.)

    Interesting discussion, isn’t it?

I love my tattoos. I have three on my left thigh and want one more. I love piercings too. I have 12 holes in my ear, but currently only wear 10 earrings. I’ve had my right nipple pierced, but it never healed up right. I have lots of friends with ink and body jewelry…it doesn’t bother me a bit!

No tattoos on me but not saying never. Two of my kids are tattooed, many of my friends, both younger and my age. Used to have a lot of holes in my ears but I’ve let most of them heal.
It’s just body adornment and humans have been doing it for eons.

Show us your tat! I don’t have one, and probably won’t get one, but I’m intrigued by people who have tasteful ones. I’m not quite into it when someone tats their entire arm with one big picture. The pin-up girl pic on this post is hot!

Former Secty of State George Shultz is a Princeton man, and he supposedly has the Princeton tiger mascot tattooed on his butt. And now whenever I meet someone from Princeton, I ask if they have one too!

I don’t think I could ever get one of my own, as I’m way too much of a wimp. Tattoos on other people don’t bother me one bit. I find them fascinating, and wonder what significance each has for its owner.

I don’t have any tats, but came close once. I always thought that if I did get one, it would be on my lower back, like yours.

I do have a pierced nose, though, and I love it. I just wear really tiny little gem nose rings in it.

Ron – Name tattoos are a big no-no!

Karen – I’m curious, why a pig? And yes, they certainly can be.

Vinomom – That sounds cute! You’ll have to show us pictures if you do it.

Dish – YES! I have toyed with the idea of getting a sparrow or a pin up girl, but it would seem random in relation to the one I have.

BLW – It is interesting to see the different demographics! Glad you didn’t mind me ripping off your idea, too. 😉

ETW – I knew you’d chime in on this one, Ms. Punk! Piercings aren’t my thing, the only time I got an unusual piercing was when I got my cartilage (top of ear) done. It never healed right, so I took it out and never did it again.

Ms. Moon – I love it that you don’t say never.

Dad – Ask and ye shall receive (this time). I love that pin-up girl tat. Love, love, love it. All of his tattoos were that well done, too. I guess it’s a good think I don’t come across any Princeton alums here, because now that’s all I’ll think of, too!

Mumma Boo – It IS interesting. I love to hear tattoo stories, although sometimes people only got them “just because.” That’s kind of a let down!

SB – Those are cute! My ex-sis-in-law has one, and it looks good. Now I wanna see a picture!

  12. 12 lola October 29, 2009 at 11:35 pm

No ink on me, and I think it’s going to stay that way. I love it on others, if it’s not stupid, and I’ve come close many times. My problem is I like change way too much and know I’d be unhappy with whatever I chose in a year or two.

Piercings (other than ears) are another thing that have to be done right and on the right person or it’s just dumbass. I’ve got six holes in my ears, but I can’t see me with a ring hanging off my eyebrow. If you don’t have the right look and attitude, then it’s not going to work.

Plus, when it goes wrong, honey, it goes wrong. A nasty, infected hole on your face or belly button is pretty disturbing. My nephew’s nipples were practically rotting off before he decided to take out his piercings.

But, hey, if it’s what you want to do and you have the right look, it’s all good with me, except those gigantic bottle cap holes people are putting in their ears. Those are disturbing.

A friend of mine has been stretching his out for a couple years with bigger and bigger rings. A couple weeks ago, he took out the bottle caps to show me the holes. I almost passed out from the smell and then laughed in his face and told him to save his money for the plastic surgery it’s going to take to put his lobes back together when he grows out of that phase. Stupid, stupid 30-year old boy!!!!

It’s weird that you were the only commentor out of 12 with a tattoo. It’s kind of the norm these days to have at least one.

I don’t have any, but I have a deep rooted love affair with rock stars, so tats are sexy to me. Also, Pink’s husband, Cary Hart, is one of the sexiest men ever and he’s covered.
